Susan Galvao
City Councillor, Ward 8, Cambridge
About Susan Susan has been involved in community activism since childhood. With experiences such as running for student council, coaching youth soccer, involvement in save the children program, save the rainforest program, peace marches and food drives. In high school she developed and implemented a drama program for mentally challenged youth. She has always been willing to stand up for what she believes in. Her love of people and the environment led her to study geography at both York University and the University of Guelph. With her focus divided equally on both human and physical geography she gained an invaluable perspective of what makes cities function successfully combined with environmental awareness and attention. She has always operated on a philosophy that all things are connected. A healthy environment and economics can go hand in hand. She even completed a research study in England dealing with the function of city centers and how to make them succeed. After graduating she used her knowledge to operate a successful business in downtown Guelph. During this time she retained her interest in public issues being a part of business organizations and committees and involvement in downtown festivals. Susan left the business after 6 years, wanting to focus more energy on public issues and family. Susan is married to lifetime resident Brian Galvao and is a mother of two. She has accumulated a long list of community and humanitarian achievements here in Cambridge including Cambridge WATERS member, Block parent program, Canadian Blood Services Donor, Family Participation in the Kans for Kids program, Pesticide action group, participation in the Foster-adopt program for Waterloo Region, Canadian Cancer society volunteer, Kidney foundation canvasser, Strong Start Reading Program site co-ordinator, Breakfast B4 learning volunteer and an active school volunteer. In 2009 Susan was nominated for the Women of Distinction Award. “The award recognizes women who through their own initiative, ability and effort, have made an exemplary achievement in their field; women who are outstanding role models because of their goals and the way they have achieved these goals”(YWCA quote). Susan had the privilege of being nominated in the category of voluntary, community and humanitarian service. This award honours volunteers, who have displayed excellence in providing leadership, and inspiration to others and enhanced the quality of life in the community. Susan’s attitude and optimism toward our city is apparent. She possesses a real S.I.M.B.Y. (Start In My Back Yard) attitude and looks forward to the opportunity of representing the peoples need for a better Cambridge.
